possible cancer of uterus ovaries, or colon; should I have more testing done

My mother died of a high grade B cell lymphoma and because of this I have been very afraid of some health issues I am having. Even though I had 2 CT scans with barium drink and IV contrast dye, blood, urine, FOBT test, colonoscopy-everything normal-not even any polyps. I also had transvaginal ultrasound-no masses or cysts. But I don't feel right. I am 48, female, and since colonoscopy, I have had spasms after bowel movements and discomfort in rectum. Also, my periods are much more painful than before. Do you think tests missed something-all tests were done within last three months. Thyroid was checked. That was O.K. too. I went for tests because of chronic constipation. Now I am always in abdominal pain or discomfort, but I am not constipated and never suffer from diarrhea. Also, if you have hemorrhoids, do they bleed all the time? I am scared. Any suggestions. Do I need more testing?

Answer by Dr Paul S, MD  on Wed 03, Sep 2008 08:13pm:

Hi. The spasms that you are presently experiencing after bowel movements, given the background of normal scans and scopes, may be an indication of irritable bowel syndrome. The cause of this is still not fully understood, but it is theorized to be an interplay of emotional and physiological factors. This may also be caused by diet changes, or by anxiety. Hemorrhoids can really bleed a lot, and if this is the case, a surgical removal of the hemorrhoids may be warranted. Home remedies for hemorrhoids would include avoiding spicy foods, increasing fiber in diet, and exposing the anal area to steam (called hot-sitz bath) for several minutes. I also believe that your anxiety has a lot to do with what you are experiencing. Anxiety increases one's perception of pain and unease. You may also benefit from some form of anti-depressant and anxiolytic therapy. I suggest you discuss these options with your doctors. Regards.
