possible endometrial cancer

I had a usg on October 27. At the time I was mid-cycle, about 17 days, I had had my period October 10. I have regular periods, but I notice more discomfort. They only last 3-4 days , but the first day I have been passing 2-3 small size clots. This has been going on for three years. The usg showed an adenomyosis, but endometrial thickening of 10mm. I had a usg in May when I was at the end of my cycle, and the lining was within 6mm. My doctor did an endometrial biopsy yesterday because she is conservative. She told me my PAP smear, which I had October 20, was normal, which was a good sign, and when she took biopsy, there was not a lot of tissue to get. She said that women with cancer have globs of tissue she can literally pull off. I need to know what the normal range of uterine thickening is. I am very worried about uterine cancer, and I have to wait one week for the results. As I said, I am 48, and have no heavy bleeding, or bleeding between periods, no spotting, no painful intercourse, and no anemia. I had 3 CT scans in six months, and nothing abnormal in uterus was revealed. My ovaries are normal, no cysts, no polyps. Also, is it unusual to have adenomyosis if you never had a baby or been pregnant? I used the pill for 23 years without interruption, but stopped five years ago due to increased fear of breast cancer. Did I increas my risk of uterine cancer with use of the pill? Thank you for your help. I am VERY worried..

Hi. The “normal” thickness of the endometrial layer or stripe will vary depending on what phase in the menstrual cycle the woman is in. If a sample was taken during the latter half of the cycle (or secretory phase), the endometrial layer can be as thick as 14-16 millimeters. In contrast, the endometrial stripe is usually only 5-8 mm thick shortly after menstruation. Menopausal women also have a normal stripe thickness of 5-8 mm. Your stripe thickness of 6 mm is within the normal range. Some doctors would still opt to investigate anything thicker than 5 mm particularly in older women, but this is not mandatory. So, judging from your strip thickness and your normal PAP smear and CT scan results, I would say that you most probably don’t have uterine cancer. Although adenomyosis frequently affects those who have had several pregnancies, it also usually occurs in women who are menopausal or near menopause. Your age therefore puts you at a higher risk for having this condition. The risk of uterine cancer is actually reduced in women who have used contraceptive pills for more than 5 years, and the risk reduction is maintained for many years after intake of the pills has stopped.
