prostate

Asked by sehrn11 (Male; 57; HTN, Prostate CA, prostatectomy (radical, robotic) one week ago. Prostatitis ; Relevant drugs:Atenolol, Lipitor, Nexium ) on Sat 29, Aug 2009 05:33pm

Husband has had prostatitis since 5/09, three rounds of antibiotics, none worked. Had a radical prostatectomy via lap with robotic assist, one week ago, due to positive biopsy. Now he feels as if the prostatitis symptoms are still present, ex: testicular pain and nausea that accompanies. My question is, Can prostatitis still be present without a prostate? Are prostatitis and prostate cancer related? Thank you

Answer by Dr Vinod, MD  on Sat 29, Aug 2009 05:55pm:

Dear sehrn11, As antibiotics did not work the surgeon suspected that he has a cancer in prostrate and that is the reason of biopsy. If biopsy is positive and the stage of the cancer is in primary stage then the surgeon might have gone for the surgery, i.e complete removal. It will take time for the inflammation to subside and over the period of time the symptoms will decrease if there is no spread of the cancer and if prognosis is good. Prostatitis and cancer are not related and the cancer might have only got detected after the antibiotics did not work and the surgeon suspected cancer and went for that biopsy. Take care!
