Hi,
I can understand your concern about the possibility of lymphoma, given the fact that your mother had Non Hodgkins (NHL).
However, please be reassured that familial forms of lymphoma are only rarely reported. There is no known genetic change that can cause heriditary lymphoma.
The exact cause of NHL is difficult to ascertain in individual cases, although population based studies have identified some possible associations. These include infection with viruses (like the Epstein Barr, HTLV-1, HHV-8, HCV, SV-40 viruses), bacteria (like H pylori, C. jejuni), herbicide exposure, and exposure to treatment with chemotherapy for Hodgkins lymphoma.
NHL is usually suspected by its signs and symptoms. It classically presents with fever, weight loss, night sweats, and lymph node swelling. This prompts a detailed investigation, including biopsy of the swollen glands. If the pathology report is positive, then further tests (like immunohistochemistry) are carried out to determine the type of NHL, and radiological/nuclear medicine tests (like CT scan, ultrasound, Xray, PET scan) are performed to determine the spread (stage) of the disease.
You have weight loss, "stomach problems", and perhaps some anxiety. So far, all your tests, including two CT scans, have come as normal. Please be reassured that NHL as an underlying cause has been reasonably ruled out in your case. Please consult an experienced gastroenterologist to correctly diagnose your condition. Please continue to be on regular follow up with your doctor.
All the best, and God bless.
