stage 4 nsc lung cancer adenocarcinoma - Prognosis and response rate
Asked by anxious (Male; 69; 69 yo male wtih > 50 year smoking history with 3 mets to brain on diagnosis (one is approx 2.2 by 2.2 cm (with edema), 2nd in less than 1 cm, 3rd is a speck. plan is wbrt. primary tumor is large left hilar tumor 7.2 cm involving left sup pulm art and vein and left main stem bronchus with post subcarinal, para tracheal and supraclavicular nodes. he has no gross neurological symptoms. ) on Thu 24, Apr 2008 08:05am
given situation, what is characteristically the response rate for the wbrt? what is prognosis ( what percentage of people
can live greater than 3-6 months?

Hi there.
From the different studies and clinical trials using the different chemotherapy regimens for stage IV non small cell lung cancer, the median survival can range from about 7-9months. This means that at this length of time, half of patients are alive and the other half have already died. The percentage of patients surviving after 1 year is about 20-30% based on the clinical trials.
Radiotherapy for brain metastasis from NSCLCA is effective in reducing the size of the tumors and improving symptoms in more than half of cases.
