Hi, Is it physically possible to father children after testicular cancer therapy? This is an important issue. You have received post-operative radiotherapy 15 years ago. The affected testes was removed, perhaps along with some abdominal lymph nodes. This was followed by radiation, to the abdomen. The answer to your question is "Yes". A majority of men who wish to become fathers are able to do so. The issue is dealt with in greater detail in the following paper: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16264178

Comment by bru61 on Wed 26, Mar 2008 04:57am: I assume it is possible to become biological parent only if a sperm collection was made prior to radiotherapy.. I think lance armstrong did that
Comment by Dr Bobby V, MD on Wed 26, Mar 2008 10:22am: Hi, Bru61 has added a very important element to this issue: that of sperm banking. This came into shaper public awareness after the bicycle champion fathered three children with his semen that he had stored before beginning testicular cancer therapy. However, the study I referred to in my previous answer included natural paternity following cancer therapy, not just using previously banked sperm. Modern surgical techniques (like nerve-sparing operations) permit preservation of erection and ejaculation functions in a majority of patients. Modern radiation techniques (including shielding of opposite testis) permit formation of good quality semen post-treatment. Thus many men can become fathers in the natural way after testicular cancer therapy. It is however advisable to bank semen (by cryopreservation) before starting treatment, in case sexual functions do not return to normal after surgery.
